awkward design

I bought these clippers on this site years ago. They are still sharp and effective, and they are all that I use. That said, I am surprised that this design has been vastly improved long ago. You flip the file up to open the clippers. And...it just dangles and flops around. It doesn't fold out of the way, doesn't lock in place. I couldn't believe that when I first got the clippers. Seriously?? Then the handle of the clipper, the side that is curved: it is perfectly smooth. So curved and smooth--what does that do? It causes your thumb to slide down towards the joint, where you can't clip. You can try to anchor your thumb on the very end of the handle. But then at that position, on the underside opposite your thumb, you tend to end up pressing on the hinge of the floppy nail file? Remember that one? There it is, not just annoying or confounding now--but actually impeding usage. I don't get the sweep of perfect 5 star reviews. Makes me question my sanity. I should probably rate even lower than 3, but I'm doubting myself.

Worth paying more for

Let me begin by admitting it's just nuts to pay $30 to $50 for nail clippers, no matter how good they may be. I can't even begin to defend my purchase on this basis. But I do appreciate some of life's little luxuries. The real question is: are these clippers worth $12 to $20 more than the other comparable clippers sold at this store? Well, yes they are. As good as the less expensive clippers are, and they are very good, these are even better. Super sharp and smooth, apparently constructed to military aircraft standards. If a surgeon at John's Hopkins ever trims my nails, these are the precision instrument he would use. So if you've got $50 burning a hole in your pocket, you could do a lot worse than blowing it on these clippers. They really are that good.
