Palisander wood, also known as cocobolo wood, is crafted into fine grooming tools in this four-piece shaving set. The handles are a bit lighter than those found in a solid steel shaving set, but each tool retains its balance and fits nicely into the palm when used. Palisander wood is a dense oily wood that takes a high polish, making it one of the best kinds of wood for repeated exposure to water, such as with a shaving set. It is also a relatively rare wood, with only small amounts reaching the world market today. The flared high carbon steel accents are plated with chromium for durability. Chromium derives its name from the Greek word “chroma” meaning “color”. In its various forms, chromium produces a wide variety of hues and it is found to add color to many precious gems; chromium provides the red hue in rubies and some of the green hues seen in emeralds. When applied over a steel base, chromium does not provide additional color; it simply strengthens the steel, protects it against corrosion or rust, and provides a mirror-like shine. The included razor handle holds a replaceable Gillette MACH3 safety razor, and the shaving brush holds a load of springy best badger bristles. Best badger shaving brushes are handcrafted with pliant uncut bristles for a softer, less stiff feel while in use and an almost whipped effect on the lather produced.
